About Assessment

English Writing Sample Evaluation

The Rutgers Graduate ELL Program administers the Graduate ELL Writing Sample evaluation as an assessment and placement tool for all Rutgers University graduate students who are speakers of other languages. The test is for students who are admitted with the condition that they take writing courses to enhance their academic skills. It is also for students who wish to take a range of writing courses available at the Grad ELL program in order to develop and enhance their academic English writing skills. The writing sample evaluation is used to accurately place the student in the course that best fits their existing writing skills.

Versant English Placement Test (VEPT)

The Versant English Placement Test (VEPT) is a standardized English language assessment that provides an evaluation of academic language skills. VEPT is used by academic institutions, governments and corporations around the world to evaluate English proficiency in all four language skills. The VEPT has been correlated to many major language proficiency scales most importantly to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which is a globally respected and recognized English language proficiency scale.

The Rutgers Graduate ELL Program administers the VEPT as an assessment and placement tool for all Rutgers University graduate students who are speakers of other languages. The test is for both students who expect to hold an International Teaching Assistantship, or graduate students who wish to take a range of courses available at the Grad ELL program in order to enhance their academic English skills. VEPT scores are used to accurately place the student in the course that best fits their existing language skills.

By leveraging the latest in speech and text processing technology, VEPT is scored using an advanced automated scoring system. The system produces an accurate, unbiased evaluation of linguistic proficiency and skills. Versant’s precision, reliability and objectivity is acknowledged by experts in the field of language acquisition and assessment world-wide. Scores remain confidential but are available to individual students, their departments, and the Graduate School-New Brunswick.
