ELL Integrated Skills Concentration

Graduate ELL Academic Integrated Skills Concentration:

The Graduate ELL Program offers a concentration in Academic Integrated Skills for graduate students who are speakers of other languages. The courses offered in this concentration serve International Teaching Assistants (ITAS) and the broader graduate student population. The courses offered in this concentration serve to develop and enhance integrated academic and professional strategies and skills in order to successfully engage in graduate level academic course work, research and professional tasks relevant to their discipline, research interests and graduate program. This concentration offers courses that are appropriate for multiple levels of linguistic proficiency.

COURSES:

Graduate ELL Academic Integrated Skills I, 16:356:590 (3 "E" credits)

Serves prospective international teaching assistants who place in an A2 proficiency level (VEPT range: 36-46). Graduate students enrolled in this course will be introduced to integrated academic and professional language strategies and skills in order to successfully begin graduate level academic course work, learn basic research strategies and introductory professional tasks relevant to their discipline and graduate program.

Graduate ELL Academic Integrated Skills II, 16:356:591 (3 "E" credits) - formerly ESL-ITA Language Skills, 16:356:561

Serves prospective and/or awarded international teaching assistants who place in a B1 or B2 proficiency level (VEPT range: 47-68). Graduate students enrolled in this course will develop integrated academic and professional strategies and skills in order to successfully engage in graduate level academic course work, research and professional tasks relevant to their disciplines and research interests as ITAs. Students will be introduced to conventions and expectations of the American classroom, American teaching methodology, as well as the linguistic, discourse, and cultural components of effective communication.

Graduate ELL Academic Integrated Skills-Across the Disciplines, 16:356:592 (3 "E" credits)

Serves prospective and/or awarded international teaching assistants who place in a C1 proficiency level (VEPT range: 69-78). Graduate students enrolled in this course will develop and enhance integrated academic and professional strategies and skills in order to successfully engage in graduate level academic course work, research and professional tasks relevant to their discipline, research interests and graduate program.
