Graduate Writing Program - Writing Test

OBJECTIVES

It is the goal of the English as a Second Language Program to enable international graduate students to meet their academic admission requirements at Rutgers University. All international graduate students with a TOEFL score below 83 or (233/575) are required by Rutgers University Graduate School-New Brunswick to take an English language placement examination given by the ESL Program.

PLACEMENT

Placement in Academic Writing I or II is based on a Reading/Writing Essay Examination (80 minutes). The maximum ESL writing courses required total 3 to 6 “E” credits, depending upon the student’s initial placement.

COURSES

ACADEMIC WRITING I: 356:531 (3 "E" credits)

This required reading/writing course emphasizes the composing and revising process in essay papers and also focuses on listening/speaking skills. Students who receive a passing letter grade of A, B+, B, C+, or C in this class go on to Academic Writing II.

ACADEMIC WRITING II: 356:532 (3 "E" credits)

This advanced writing course focuses on producing a coherent and cohesive research paper. Students in this class received a passing letter grade in Academic Writing I, or they were placed in this class on the basis of their ESL placement test. Students who receive a passing letter grade of A, B+, B, C+, or C in this class will have completed their ESL reading/writing requirement.
