WHO MUST TAKE THE RUTGERS ITA VIDEO ASSESSMENT TEST (RIVA)?
All students certified 2 and enrolled in ITA Phonology, Language Skills and/or Speech Center are required to take RIVA at the end of the semester. At that time, you will be assessed to determine whether or not you can teach.

WHAT IS RIVA?
During RIVA, you will make an eight-minute presentation, that will be videotaped, on a topic in your field. During the presentation, undergraduate students and faculty members will ask you questions.

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR THE RIVA?
You will be required to submit two topics from your field of study to the ESL Graduate ITA office two weeks before RIVA. You may also prepare handouts.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR THE RIVA?
In order to sign up for RIVA, go to the following website:

WHERE WILL THE RIVA BE ADMINISTERED?
RIVA will be administered on the Livingston Campus in Lucy Stone Hall B018.

HOW SHOULD I BEGIN MY PRESENTATION?
On the day of your RIVA presentation, plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early. The topic that you will present that day will be posted on the wall outside. You will be asked to enter the room by a facilitator. The room in which you will be giving your presentation is in Lucy Stone B018. You will have access to a white board and a desk.

The cameraperson will tell you when to begin. Begin your presentation by introducing yourself, your department, and your topic, and write this information on the board. Then continue with your presentation. We encourage you to bring handouts rather than write lengthy information on the board at the beginning of the presentation.

HOW WILL MY PRESENTATION BE ASSESSED?
Your presentation will be assessed by at least three faculty members and three undergraduates. All discrepant assessments will be reviewed by another faculty member. You will be assessed on your pronunciation, clarity of expression, listening comprehension, and overall communicative skills in a classroom environment.
