SPEAK Test

OVERVIEW

The Rutgers ESL program uses the Educational Testing Service SPEAK test for the initial assessment and placement of ITAs and prospective ITAs, and international graduate students who will be appointed as part-time lecturers (PTLs). The SPEAK test is a twenty minute standardized test administered via audiotape in the Language Lab. Examinees are provided with a blank cassette and test booklet. The SPEAK test questions range from giving directions to presenting information to a group. Please note that once the test is begun, it cannot be interrupted or stopped.

Two instructors trained by Educational Testing Services rate each tape. A third rater adjudicates all discrepancies in test ratings. Students, their departments, and the Graduate School-New Brunswick can view the scores and placement by logging on to http://www.rutgers-ita.net three business days after the exam.

Based on the SPEAK scores, ITAs are given the corresponding code and class placement:

NOTE: **Students who score 45 on the SPEAK test will be asked to give a 5 to 8-minute presentation in their field of study, similar to the one they would present in a classroom environment. This presentation will be assessed by ESL faculty, and it will be videotaped. The test is administered a few days after SPEAK in Lucy Stone Hall room B018, on the Livingston Campus. Students and the Graduate School-New Brunswick will be notified of their placement within four days of video testing.
